Portable desks create outdoor learning opportunities

Now that the weather has turned warmer, Martic Elementary School first-graders are being encouraged to head outdoors and hit the Surf – their Surf portable desks, that is. The students are using the lightweight, one-piece desks to provide both a seat and a work space while reading, writing or working on their laptops during lessons outdoors – or anywhere else for that matter.

“All first-grade students have access to a Surf desk, and they are used for small-group reading and flexible seating opportunities for when children need it and alternate placements resulting from COVID space restrictions,” said Jen Sugra, Martic principal. “Students love them.”

The desks have made it easier for students to learn outdoors, where they can take a break from mask requirements. Martic purchased 40 of the desks for about $800 through a partnership with the United Way and Community Action Partnership of Lancaster.
