Supporting mental health at school

Recognizing that students may be experiencing mental health struggles during the pandemic, Ms. Jennifer Yutzy, a teacher at the West York Area High School, reached out to fellow teachers and administration to brainstorm ways to offer support within the West York community. As a result of those efforts, “WY Stepping Up for Suicide Prevention” came about. The program had teachers and students walking daily, COVID-safe with masks and social distancing, from 3:15-4:15 p.m. at the high school. Participants walked several miles and flights of steps to support local suicide prevention programs. This effort began on February 15 and ran through March 15. The high school HOPE Club provided a large donation from various past fundraisers, to support this project.
